FIRST STEP: When you notice yourself beating yourself up in your head, shaming yourself, berating yourself or screaming inside your head: ‘WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME’…
BREATHE, AT LEAST 2 TIMES, SLOWLY, HOLDING IT
IN FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN LET IT OUT SLOWLY.
THEN ASK YOURSELF: WHAT IF THERE’S A GOOD
REASON FOR WHY YOU ARE DOING/BEHAVING THIS WAY.
WHAT IF YOU ARE NOT “MISBEHAVING”?
OUR BRAINS USUALLY WANT TO DEFAULT TO THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS
LIKE:
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?” (THIS IS ONE OF THE
MOST POPULAR I HEAR.)
“THERE’S SOMETHING SO WRONG WITH ME!”
“WHY DO I KEEP FAILING?? I HAVE A PATTERN OF
FAILING, WHAT IF I CAN NEVER CHANGE?”
“WHY DO I THINK I’LL EVER BE ANY DIFFERENT?
I’M ALWAYS GOING TO BE OVERWEIGHT. I’M SO ASHAMED OF MYSELF.”
“WHY DO YOU KEEP EATING A PAN OF BROWNIES,
BAG OF CHEESE PUFFS, 1000 CALORIE DRINK? I’M SO PATHETIC/WEAK/SAD/DISGUSTING ETC.”
“HOW COULD YOU EVER THINK ANYONE WILL LOVE ME
WHEN I TREAT MYSELF LIKE THIS.”
“NO ONE WILL LOVE ME. I CAN’T EVEN FIGURE OUT
HOW TO LOVE ME.”
“WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS?”
“I DON’T LIKE MYSELF” or "I HATE MYSELF".
“I’M SUCH A ___________” FILL IN THE BLANK
WITH THE UNKIND NAMES YOUR BRAIN CALLS YOU.
OUCH THESE ARE
BRUTAL!! BUT WE ALL SAY SOME VERSION OF
THEM TO OURSELVES AT SOMETIMES.
The first step to
starting to approach your weight-loss journey with compassion is understanding
that these thoughts just mean you have a normal brain that is looking for
danger (this is how the brain sees the danger: AHHHH you’re trying to change my
eating old habits, what if we die???)
But you don’t have to listen. You don’t
have to talk to yourself like this. Just recognize this is a normal human brain
instinct, nothing is wrong with you.
AND YOU CAN
QUESTION ALL THESE THOUGHTS & YOU DON’T HAVE TO BELIEVE THEM.
