WHAT IS EMOTIONAL OVEREATING &
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW
It may be helpful to understand just what
emotional eating or emotional overeating is.
In really simple terms it means you eat instead of
feeling an emotion.
We do this on many levels.
A good majority of the time, we emotionally eat to
avoid feeling an uncomfortable feeling/emotion like sadness, despair,
depressed, stressed, overwhelmed, confused, indecision, anger.
We feel a negative emotion, we don’t have
effective tools for processing & feeling the emotions, so we go to the
easiest thing instinctively: shove a doughnut, brownie, bag of chips in the mouth.
Examples of emotional eating:
1-One of my clients realized that she was eating
to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. She didn’t realize that when she needed to
tell someone something that she thought might her their feelings, she went and
consoled herself with treats etc. before telling the person.

3-Another client realized that she was feeling
stressed because of her job, she was feeling like her boss was piling the work
on her schedule because she was single while co-workers with children went home
earlier or had different work-loads. She realized that she was overwhelmed
& resentful & as a result would go get a big, sugary latte every day to
deal with the stress.
Everything we do is motivated by a feeling. When
we eat food that isn’t healthy fuel food & we don’t eat the right types & amounts of
food for our bodies to be at their ideal weight, we are usually emotionally
eating.
One interesting thing is that we will eat for
other emotions that aren’t seemingly negative.
We, as a society, are in the habit of eating to
celebrate. Feeling excited to celebrate is definitely a feeling and notice how
our societies norms have wired us to think things like: it’s a birthday you
must have a huge meal & a big ‘ole cake! Or, you just got a promotion!!
Let’s go celebrate & have the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet!!!
We also eat for boredom. Boredom can sneak up on
us. It isn’t exactly a negative emotion, although it can occur as uncomfortable
to us. Notice if you are ever just putting something in your mouth because you
are bored. If so, you are emotionally eating.
THIS IS GREAT TO KNOW BECAUSE again, everything we do is
motivated by a feeling. We can learn to choose the feelings that we want
motivating our eating.
THIS IS GREAT TO KNOW SO THAT WE CAN START TO learn how to create emotions like self-confidence, self-love, self-acceptance, self-compassion, joy, peace, or calmness ON PURPOSE.

I never knew we could choose to create our
emotions. Mind blown when I heard that.
It has changed my life. It has changed my body. It
has changed my world. I know it can change yours too.
